What is calling an audible?

Calling an audible in football means changing the original play call at the line of scrimmage based on the defensive alignment. The quarterback may call an audible when they see that their original play will not be effective against the defense they are facing. An audible changes the responsibilities of the offensive players, and the quarterback usually will communicate the new play call to the offense before the snap. Audibles can include changing the running direction, changing the route of a receiver or tight end, or even changing the blocking scheme. Successfully calling an audible can be a strategic move to gain an advantage over the defense and gain a successful offensive play.
